Death of Lord Somerleyton, GCVO, former Master of the Horse

The 3rd Baron Somerleyton, GCVO, a former senior member of the Royal Household, who served as Master of the Horse, died 24 January, 2012. He was 83. Lord Somerleyton was appointed a Lord-in-Waiting to the Queen in 1979, and from 1991 to 1999 was Master of the Horse. He was appointed GCVO in 1998.

He was born Savile William Francis Crossley, 17 Sept, 1928, son of the 2nd Baron by his wife the former Bridget Hoare; and succeeded to the peerage (Baron UK, 1916) on his father's death, 15 July, 1959.

He married in 1963, Belinda Maris Loyd, dau of Capt Vivian Loyd, of Ascot, by whom he had a son, and 4 daughters. The son, Hugh Francis Savile Crossley, born 27 Sept, 1971, inherits the peerage.
