Death of Angela Jane de Havilland

Angela Jane de Havilland (née Franklin) who died 24 April, 2009, was the 2nd wife, and widow, of Major-General Peter Hugh de Havilland, CBE (b 29 July 1904), Royal Artillery, scion of that LG family, of Havilland Hall, and cousin of the actresses Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine. She was the former Angela Jane Franklin, dau of R. Franklin, and married the Maj-Gen as his 2nd spouse in 1981. (He had married 1stly, 1930, Helen Elizabeth Wrey (d 1976), dau of William Whitmore Otter-Barry (scion of that LG family see 1952 edition). Funeral at Little Horkesley Church, 12th May 2009.

Lieutenant-Colonel William John Herbert Forbes of Rothiemay, DSO (1945), 3rd of Rothiemay, of Dunira, by Comrie, Perthshire, late the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, Representor of the House of Forbes of Rothiemay, died at Amesbury Abbey, 26 April, 2009, aged 96. He was b 25 Sept, 1912, son of Cdr William Stronach Forbes, OBE, RN (d 1949), by his wife Helen, scion of the LG family of Strutt of Belper, dau of George Herbert Strutt.

He was a descendant of John Forbes, of Newe (and he was descended from Sir Wm Forbes, of Kynaldy and Pitsligo 1419-46, whose brother Sir Alexander Forbes was cr 1st Lord Forbes - a peerage now extinct).

He married 9 Jul 1941, Diana Burrell de Ker Knox, only child of William Barr Knox, of Ryefield House, Daldry, Ayrshire, by whom he had issue:- (1) Iain William Stronach Forbes, b 1 May, 1942, deceased before 1989 (2) Maj. Colonel Tony King-Harman dies aged 91

Colonel Anthony Lawrence (Tony) King-Harman, OBE, DL, of Ouse Manor, Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, scion of the Earls of Kingston, died 25 Apr, 2009, aged 91. He was b 28 Feb 1918, son of Capt Robert Douglas King- Harman, DSO, DSC, RN (b 1891; d 1978) by his wife the former Lily Moffatt; married 21 Dec 1944, Jeanette Stella, nee Dunkerley, by whom he had issue, sons, William and Michael. He was father-in-law of Judy and Barbara and grandfather of Alizé, Bibette, Charles and Jasper.

Tony King-Harman was a grandson of Sir Charles Anthony King-Harman, KCMG (1851-1939), by his wife the former Constance Biddulph (d 1961).

Funeral at St Peter's Church, Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, Friday 15th May.

Colonel John Evelyn Baring Hills, DL, TD, dies at 69

Col. John Evelyn Baring Hills, DL, TD, late the 17/21st Lancers and Royal Wessex Yeomanry, died suddenly 26 April, 2009, at the age of 69. He was b 16 May 1939, son of Lt.-Col. John David Hills (d Jul 1975), by his wife the former Lady Rosemary Ethel Baring (b 17 December 1908; d 14 Apr 2004), dau of the 2nd Earl of Cromer (1877-1953), by his wife the former Lady Ruby Florence Mary Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound (b 26 September 1886; d 5 Nov 1961), dau of the 4th Earl of Minto (1845-1914). Colonel John Hills was educated at Eton College; Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.), 1989.He served as High Sheriff of Gloucestershire in 1990. Major, 17th/21st Lancers. He was Honorary Aide-de-Camp to HM Queen Elizabeth II between 1990 and 2003.Colonel, Royal Wessex Yeomanry (Territorial Army). He married 6 Mar 1964, Katherine Adrian Alderson-Smith, daughter of G. F. Alderson-Smith, by whom he had a son (John) George Baring Hills b on 24 March 1966, and a dau, Veronica Adrian Harriet (Wonkie)Hills, who was b 23 August 1968. He also leaves grandchildren, Rosie and Jack.

Thomas Edward Francis BURNE was b 1980. His mother, Eugénie Nancy b 1947 was the dau of Lt-Cdr Hon Douglas David Edward VIVIAN DSC RN (1915-73) & Mary Alice dau of Francis John Gordon BORTHWICK (scion of L Borthwick) and she married Simon Burne in 1966 (divorced 1988) he was son of Brig John Richard Burne, of Grove Cottage, Chiddingfold, Surrey. Eugénie's father was the second son of the 4th Baron Vivian of Glyn and of Truro (UK cr 1841) (the first son by) and his 2nd wife Nancy Lycett (dau of Sir Edward Lycett Green, 2nd Bt).

Richard Alexander Hambro, who died 25 April, 2009, aged 62, was a scion of the LG family of that name.

He married 1stly, 1973 (div 1982), the Hon Charlotte Clementine Soames (b 17 Jul 1954, who married 2nd 15 Apr 1989, the 3rd Earl Peel), dau of the Baron Soames (life peer) (1920-87), by his wife the former Mary Spencer-Churchill (b 15 Sept 1922), dau of the Rt Hon Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (1874-1965); married 2ndly, 1984 (div 1992), Juliet Mary Elizabeth Harvey, daughter of Major Thomas Cockayne Harvey by his wife the former Lady Katharine Mary Coke, dau of the Earl of Leicester; married 3rdly, 1993, Mary Briggs.

He is survived by his third wife and an only child of the 1st marriage, Clementine Silvia Hambro (b 1976), who married 3 Nov, 2006, Orlando Gregory Fraser (b. 1967), scion of the Lords Lovat. He also leaves a granddaughter, Ruby Elizabeth Mary Fraser, b 19 March, 2007.

Ken Annakin, film director, dies aged 94

Ken Annakin, OBE, the film director (Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines/Battle of the Bulge), who died 22 April, 2009, aged 94, was b 10 Aug 1914.

He was a nephew of the 1st (and last) Viscount Snowden (cr 1931, ext. 15 May 1937). Annakin's father was a brother of Ethel Annakin, who, in 1905, married the Labour politician, and future viscount, Philip Snowden.

Sir Robin Gillett, 2nd Baronet, who died 21 April, 2009, aged 83, was Lord Mayor of London, 1976-77.

Robin Danvers Penrose Gillett was born 9 Nov 1925, the son of Sir (Sydney) Harold Gillett, 1st Bt, MC, who was Lord Mayor of London, 1958-59.

Sam Mercer Nairne is a grandson paternally of the 8th Marquess of Lansdowne, PC (1912-99), and a grandson maternally of Lt-Col Lord Douglas Claude Alexander Gordon, DSO.

Olympic oarsman Ed Coode's wife gives birth to daughter

Clare K. Coode (née Smales) wife of Edward R (Ed) Coode (b. 19 June, 1975), the Gold Medal winning Olympic oarsman, gave birth to a daughter, Ottilie Mary, 16 Mar, 2009, a sister for Beatrice Mary (Bee), who was b 11 February, 2007.

He was b 24 Aug 1922; son of Maj the 10th Earl of Harrington (1887-1929), by his wife the former Margaret Trelawney (Susan) Seaton; succeeded his father in 1929 in the Earldom of Harrington and Viscountcy of Petersham and Barony of Harrington, and to the Viscountcy of Stanhope of Mahon and Barony of Stanhope of Elvaston in 1967 on the demise of his kinsman, the last Earl Stanhope.

Marjorie Viscountess St Davids dies

_.Marjorie Viscountess St Davids, 3rd wife and widow of the 2nd Viscount St Davids, died 2nd April 2009 at Wymondley Nursing Home.

She was the former (Evelyn) Marjorie Harris, only dau. of Dr John Edmund Guy Harris, of The Hermitage, Bray-on-Thames, co. Berkshire, and married 19 Oct 1959, Jestyn Reginald Austen Plantagenet Philipps, 2nd Viscount St Davids (1917-1991).

Her husband succeeded his mother, 12 Dec 1974, as 15th Baron Strange of Knokyn, 23rd Baron Hungerford and 21st Baron de Moleyns. He died 10 Jun 1991, and was succeeded in his peerages by a son of his 1st wife. Funeral Service at All Saints Church, Willian on Wednesday 22nd April 2009.

Major Sir (Arthur) John Stewart Griffin, KCVO, Press Secretary to HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, 1956-91, died 1 April, 2009, aged 85. He married 1962, Henrietta Montagu Douglas Scott (1934-2008), scion of the Dukes of Buccleuch & Queensberry, dau of Brigadier (Claud) Andrew Montagu Douglas Scott, DSO (1906-71) by his 1st wife the former Lady Victoria Doris Rachel Haig, dau of Field Marshal the 1st Earl Haig; his wife died 20 Feb, 2008. He is survived by sons, (i) Andrew Michael Stewart Griffin b 27 April 1963, & (ii) Philip Anthony Stewart Griffin, b 23 May 1965. Private family funeral on Tuesday 14th April. Memorial Service in London to be announced later.

Lord Dean of Harptree, PC , dies

The Lord Dean of Harptree, PC, died 1 April, 2009. He was aged 84.

As Sir (Arthur) Paul Dean, MP, he served as Tory Member of Parliament for Somerset North from 1964 to 1983, and after boundary changes, for Woodspring from 1983 until his retirement at the 1992 General Election (Apr 9).

He was educated at Ellesmere College and Exeter College, Oxford. He was Member of Parliament for Somerset North from 1964 to 1983, and after boundary changes, for Woodspring from 1983 until his retirement at the 1992 - preceding Dr Liam Fox. Sir Paul was a junior minister for Health and Social Security during the Heath administration 1970-1974 . From 1982 onwards, he was a Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons firstly under George Thomas and then Bernard Weatherill.

In 1993 he was made a life peer as Baron Dean of Harptree, of Wedmore in the County of Somerset.

9th Earl Nelson (1941-2009)

The 9th Earl Nelson, who died 28 March, 2009, aged 67, inherited the title created to honour the celebrated naval hero Horatio Nelson, and served his country in a more modest capacity as a policeman; the story of the title is one that does not reflect much credit on successive British governments, which begrudged doing their duty by Nelson's descendants.


Peter John Horatio Nelson was born 9 Oct 1941; succeeded to the earldom in 1981 (Guardian 24 Sept 1981); Pres R Naval Commando Assoc and Nelson Soc.
Succeeded by his son Simon John Horatio Nelson, born September 21, 1971.

Olive Mary Windsor-Clive

Olive Mary Windsor Clive (née Longueville), died at her home, 28 March 2009, aged 86. She was born in 1922 as Olive Mary Longueville, dau of Lt-Col Francis Longueville, DSO, MC (b 1892), by his wife the former Gertrude Venables, 2nd dau. of Rowland Vemables, of Oakhurst, Oswestry, Shropshire. Her siblings are Reginald Francis Longueville, b 1922, killed in action in Holland 1944; Peter Longueville, of Ayton Castle, Eyemouth, Berwickshire, b 1925; and Anne Gertrude Longueville, b 1921, who m. 1945, Capt. Francis Arthur Windsor-Clive, (b 1922), scion of the Earls of Plymouth; she married 29 Dec 1949, Brig Robert Charles Windsor Clive (b 1919. d.) scion of the Earls of Plymouth, and elder brother of the abovementioned Francis; she had issue, (i) George Francis, b 26 Jan 1954; & (i) Annabel Mary, b 29 Mar 1951. She also leaves grandchildren, Gabriel, Victoria, Thomas and Johnny. Funeral St Peter's RC Church, Ludlow, 6th April 2009.

6th Baron Feversham (1945-2009)

The 6th Baron Feversham, of Duncombe Park, Helmsley, North Yorkshire, died at the Castle Hill Hospital, Hull, 29 March, 2009. He was aged 64.

Charles Antony Peter Duncombe was born 3 Jan 1945, son of Colonel Antony John Duncombe-Anderson (1907-49), by his wife the former Gioranna Georgina Valerie McNalty (who on behalf of herself and her children abandoned by deed poll the surname of Duncombe-Anderson & assumed the surname of Duncombe only, 12 Mar 1954).

He succeeded to the barony (cr 1826) on the demise of his kinsman, the 3rd (and last) Earl of Feversham in 1963. He also inherited the Duncombe Park estate, and its 13,000 acres.
Educated at Eton he became a journalist and author and took a keen interest in the arts which resulted in him being appointed to several key positions, including President of the Yorkshire Arts Association from 1987 to 1991, chairman of the trustees of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and also of the Standing Conference of Regional Arts Associations.

He was also a member of various committees of the Arts Council of Great Britain from 1969- 1980, the Arts and Education Committee of the Calouste Gulbenkian UK and Commonwealth branch. Lord Feversham was also an honorary fellow of Bretton Hall College, West Yorks.
For some 36 years he was a member of Helmsley Town Council and was three times its chairman. He also became President of the National Local Councils Association (NALC) and president of the Yorkshire and Cleveland LCA, and was also president of the Society of Yorkshiremen in London.

His many other public office appointments included being a governor of Leeds Polytechnic and the York Theatre Royal. For 30 years he sat as a crossbencher in the House of Lords.
His ancestor, the wealthy goldsmith Sir Charles Duncombe who became Lord Mayor of London, after a brief sojurn in the Tower on a charge – later dropped – of falsifying Exchequer bills, then bought the Helmsley estate in 1695.

Lord Feversham was twice wed - firstly, in 1966 to Shannon Foy (died 1976), dau of Sir Thomas Arthur Wyness Foy, CSI; secondly in 1979, to Pauline M. Aldridge, dau of John Aldridge, of Newark, Notts. He leaves issue, two sons and a daughter from the first marriage, viz: the Hon Jasper Orlando Slingsby Duncombe born 14 March 1968, and the Hon Jake Barnaby born in 1972, and the Hon Melissa Rose born in 1973; and one son from the second union, the Hon Patrick Charles Kildare Duncombe, born in 1981. The eldest son, Jasper, inherits the title.
The funeral is to be held in private at the chapel at Duncombe Park. A memorial service is to be later, but the date and place have yet to be arranged.

Sir Reresby Sitwell, Bt, dies

Sir (Sacheverell) Reresby Sitwell, 7th Baronet, who has died aged 81, was scion of the great literary dynasty, and owner of Renishaw Hall, Derbyshire.

He was born 15 April, 1927, son of Sir Sacheverell Sitwell, CH, 6th Bt, by his wife Georgia Louise (died 1980), dau of Arthur Doble; & educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge.

Served as Lieutenant, Grenadier Guards, BAOR, 1946-48; advertising and PR executive, 1948-60; vending machine operator 1960-70; wine merchant 1960-75; High Sheriff of Derbyshire, 1983; Freeman of the City of London, 1984; a DL for Derbyshire since 1984; Lord of the Manor of Eckington and Barlborough, Derbyshire and of Whiston and Barmpton-en- le-Morthen, Yorkshire. Succeeded to the baronetcy (cr 1808) on the demise of his father, 1988.

Sir Reresby married in 1952, Penelope Forbes (b 1923), scion of the Earls of Granard, younger daughter of Colonel the Hon Donald Alexander Forbes, DSO, MVO (1880-1938), by his wife Mary Doreen Lawson (d 1987), descended from the Viscounts Mountgarret; by whom he had one daughter, Alexandra Isobel Susanna Edith, born in 1958 (wife of a son of millionaire businessman Sir Jack Hayward).

The baronetcy now devolves upon his nephew, George Reresby Sacheverell Sitwell, born in 1967, son of the late Francis Trajan Sacheverell Sitwell (1935-2004), of Weston Hall, Towcester, by his wife Susanna Carolyn Cross. The new baronet announced his engagement a couple of years ago to one Martha L. de Blank, second daughter of Mr & Mrs Justin de Blank, of London.

The nephew gets the title, but his daughter inherits Renishaw.
